Statement from President Treseler regarding SCOTUS Affirmative Action Decision

June 29, 2023

The Cal State Student Association (CSSA) values diversity, equity, and inclusion within our institutions of higher education. While we acknowledge the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action, we believe this decision undermines the importance of equal opportunity and access to education for all. As an organization representing the collective interests of California State University (CSU) students, we understand the significance of this decision and its potential implications for our diverse student body.

Affirmative action has been an essential tool in addressing historical disadvantages and fostering a more diverse and representative campus community. It has been pivotal in providing opportunities for underrepresented groups, ensuring that our campuses reflect the rich tapestry of our society.

In the face of the SCOTUS ruling, the CSSA stands firm in its unwavering dedication to promoting the establishment of inclusive environments that wholeheartedly embrace diversity in all its forms. We acknowledge and commend the ongoing efforts of the CSU campuses in implementing holistic admissions processes that consider a comprehensive range of factors beyond solely academic achievements. The CSSA fully supports these endeavors and encourages the continual refinement of admissions practices to ensure they align with the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive student body enhances the educational experience, fosters innovation, and prepares students for success in a global society. It is through the recognition of the unique experiences, perspectives, and talents of all individuals that we can truly create an enriching and transformative learning environment.

As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for a welcoming and inclusive educational environment that values and embraces diversity, promotes understanding, and prepares our students to be leaders in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Together, we will continue to champion access, equity, and opportunity for all CSU students

CSSA recognizes that today’s decision may have an emotional impact on many in our CSU community. We encourage students to utilize resources on their campuses for support: https://www.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/Pages/mental-health-services.aspx
